Women’s First Team Flip the Result Against Flower City 1872, With a 2-0 Win at Founders
By Zander Plizga
Cheswick, PA – The Women’s First Team got revenge on Flower City 1872 with a 2-0 victory at Founders Field on a windy Thursday evening. As in last week’s match, the winning team scored early. Steel City punched home a goal off a long-range set piece within six minutes to take an early lead. They didn’t look back from there and kept up the pressure and possession. This win moved Steel City to (4-4-0) on the season, with two games left to play.
Goalkeeper Peyton O’Malley (Bowling Green ’28) and the Steel City backline kept the dynamic Flower City 1872 offense off the scoreboard. Despite the high press and quick play from Flower City, the smothering defense and connectivity of the SCFC backline shut down most chances. O’Malley made a few big saves, the biggest coming in the 41st minute off a deflection inside the six-yard box off a corner kick.

Hot Starts & Early Goals
Steel City’s first goal came from a set piece just inside the half-field. Coco Dorfman (Marquette ’28) stepped up and launched a ball into the Flower City box. The ball found Samantha Miller’s (Kent State ’27) head and forced the goalie to make a diving push save. Miller was the first to the rebound and smashed home the opening goal inside of six minutes of play.
The second goal came within the opening minutes of the second half. Jayden Sharpless (Duquesne ’27) intercepted a ball high up the field and played a perfect, dipping ball over a Flower City defender and into the path of Sydney Chantos (RMU ’29). Chantos collected the pass and calmly placed her shot past the keeper’s near post, putting Steel City up 2-0 in the 51st minute.
