Mikey Sullivan makes MLS debut for Toronto FC
From Steel City to the Pros
When Michael Sullivan stepped onto the field for Steel City FC’s Men’s First Team, he wasn’t just representing the crest on his jersey—he was proving what’s possible when a player commits to the final stage of their development. Today, we’re proud to celebrate how far he’s taken that journey: Michael has officially signed with Toronto FC II, has captained the team in MLS NEXT Pro, and—just this summer—made his Major League Soccer debut with Toronto FC).
This is more than just a proud moment for one of our own. It’s proof that the Steel City FC development model works.
A Core Piece of Our First Team’s Success
Michael joined our club—then known as Arsenal FC of Pittsburgh—at a crucial point in his soccer journey: the Performance Phase. This is the final step in our player pathway, where the emphasis shifts from learning to performing and preparing for the next level.
Competing in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), Michael played a pivotal role as a central midfielder for our Men’s First Team during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. In that time:
He logged 1,400+ minutes across two seasons, consistently leading the team in work rate and defensive recoveries. He contributed directly to Steel City FC’s 2023 and 2024 NPSL Great Lakes Conference championships, and scored in the Midwest Regional Final. His on-field leadership and versatility allowed us to compete against the region’s best, often controlling the tempo in the heart of midfield.
While Michael didn’t come through our early development phases, his time in the Performance Phase proved that even a short window in our system can make a lasting impact when a player embraces the challenge.
Trusting the Process: From Late Entry to Pro Contract
Mikey started with Century United and starred at Deer Lakes High School. He then played four years at the University of Pittsburgh, helping the Panthers to their first-ever ACC regular season title and earning selection in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft—picked 39th overall by Toronto FC.
With Toronto FC II, Mikey became a regular starter, then earned the captain’s armband—a notable accomplishment for a first-year pro. He scored a game-winning goal in an April match and impressed enough to earn his MLS debut with Toronto FC’s first team on June 28, 2025.
Mikey’s Message: Steel City Prepared Me
In a recent exclusive interview with our club, Mikey shared insights into his path to the pros—and the impact of the Performance Phase:
“I’m fortunate to have had the coaches that I did. The support group at Steel City was nothing but fantastic and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”
His words reinforce what we believe: committing to our process can transform potential into results.
The Steel City Pathway: Built for Moments Like This
Mikey’s story highlights that the Performance Phase isn’t just a final step—it’s a launchpad. Our Phase Model is intentional, culminating in the Performance Phase where players test themselves in high-level, adult environments.
Success like his is no accident. It’s the result of dedication, trust, and a system that serves players at every entry point.
